Source: Homestuck
Canon point: At the same point d-stridenasty is at the time of his entry into the medium in canon, except at that point everything goes pear-shaped, and he ends up in this session instead.
Gender: Duedly
Age: 13
Colour: #e00707
Chumhandle: turntechGodhead
History: Here’s a link to the MSPA Wiki page on Mr. Strider.
Personality: First off let me ease some fears/concerns/assumptions/whatever the fuck by assuring you that I am not playing Dave “Manpain” Strider or Dave “I’m totally stoic I never show emotions” Strider.
I’m playing Dave “Sports” Strider, Dave “if I see one more soft bulbous bottom being like kind of jutting out and impudent or whatever im gonna fly off the handle” Strider, Dave “that be DEVOTION you herniated pro wrestlers sweaty purple taint” Strider.
Dave is, first off, a highly intelligent kiddo. He might not make it as apparent as Rose or Jade, but he’s packing some brains up there, just like all the kids. He’s smart enough to figure out how to keep fifty timelines in check, after all.
Dave is also a really insecure dude. He does that thing that a lot of very smart insecure kids do, by trying to hide just how much he cares about the people around him via sarcasm, humor, and irony. He constantly is looking for attention and, more importantly, affirmation. He doesn’t think he’s someone that will be missed, and he feels the need to remind people of his presence. When someone doesn’t answer his pesters he just keeps typing not just to hear the sound of his own voice, but because he’s afraid they’re ignoring him, maybe if he says something particularly clever or just sends enough messages, then they’ll stop ignoring him. Then they’ll remember him.
I could probably write ya'll a fucking essay about how SBaHJ can be read as a look into the inner workings of Dave's mind, but I will spare you.
On the topic of emotions, Dave’s somehow – and I can’t for the life of me figure how – got a reputation in fandom as being a stoic sort of dude, who gives no shits and doesn’t display any emotions. This is the opposite of the truth, honestly, and we’ve seen how Dave reacts to a lot of really strange and horrible situations from puppet dongs to Dirk’s death to Terezi’s flirtations and his thwarted attempt at self-sacrifice at the Green Sun.
But though a lot of tragic shit has happened to him, I don’t think it’s right to focus overly on his ~~manpain. Not just because all the other kids have had a lot of equally shitty stuff happen to them, but because that just doesn’t line up with the way that Dave reacts? To situations? He might dwell on it a little, sure, but more privately than that, and he doesn’t have a Batman-esque MY PARENTS ARE DEAAAD jerk reaction to every little thing that might relate back to everything that’s happening. Throughout the game he retains his sense of humor and his wit, and he seems to be fully cognizant of the sufferings of other people, and not prone to prioritizing his own.
And Dave consistently puts other people first. That’s one of the key characteristics of the Knight class, of course, which we also see in Karkat (they’re way more similar than either would ever think), and it’s a big aspect of how he acts and reacts throughout the game. He feels protective of Jade, even though Jade Harley is perhaps the person least in need of protection like, ever, in anything, because he cares about her lots and lots. He tries to keep Rose from sacrificing herself in the Green Sun cause he thinks she’s more valuable, more worthy of life, than him, and because he cares about and loves her too. When Karkat has his little emotional shipping chart breakdown in Act 6 Intermission 2, Dave displays frankly remarkable consideration for a fourteen year old boy by not going no Terezi’s mine no let’s fight over who “owns” the girl and other shitty stuff like that, but instead his immediate reaction is “woah there friend I think you need to slow down and you know what does terezi think cause she sort of gets to make this decision.”
He really is, for a guy who churns out phrases like “radically effervescing arms of more little boy peckers than you can image. turning out insane corkscrew haymakers of a billion dancing Vienna sausages strong” a chivalrous dude. Which is in turns sort of precious and sort of totally unnecessary.
Going back to his phraseology, Dave Strider is a straight up wordsmith he is the master of the English language hes collared that lexicon and everything. He has an ability to spin the most convoluted and nonsensical extended metaphors, that still somehow make sense. He can match wits with Rose “Consider this your first lesson in showmanship” Lalonde and Terezi “Make her pay” Pyrope and that is no mean feat. Putting him and Rose – any Rose anywhere in any universe at any age – in the same pesterlog is sort of one of my favorite things to do? Because they just get off the fucking wall and wander on tangents about plush proboscis and sports and each others various and sundry Freudian dreams.
Okay okay I think I’ve probably splained my feelings about Dave’s personality enough for now. JFC that's like 700 words, mea culpa.
Abilities & physical limitations: Dave's got the strength, agility, and general physical prowress of a thirteen year old boy, if that thirteen year old boy also had regular fights on the rooftop with his brother and his brother's puppet.
Appearance:
this smooth motherfucker
Notable AU differences, if applicable: None
Strife Specibus: 1/2 swordkind
Prototyping: some sweet smuppet ass. Like, literally. The ass of a smuppet. (he doesn't want to talk about it.)
His second prototyping is a dead crow, because I love the crow motif too much, and I will keep it if permissible.
Title: Maven of Meter
In-game abilities: "Meter" is an aspect that has to do with the rhythmic and ordered flow of time. A Meter player is given the ability to sense best at what pace and speed events should occur in-game for greatest success, and is able to sometimes set these events in motion.
A Meter player also has the ability to make a set of actions/reactions occur again and again, for specific lengths of time. This could go anywhere from having a book's page turn every five seconds, to cosmic-sized events (depending on how powerful the player is).
The Maven class is a defensive/passive class, the player of which is an expert on their Aspect, and someone who passes on knowledge. Mavens have more influence on their party members than a normal person would have, and are able to spread knowledge to their party unusually fast. Mavens intensely gather intelligence, and are often the first to pick up on some new element or change in the game.
Also? Much sicker beats.
Planet: Land of Heat and Clockwork. Hopefully it's okay that I'm lifting this (and his title and specibus) from canon, since I'm taking him from his canon point right before he enters the game. If not, I can put together alternate options right quick. So, consorts are these terrible little red nakkodile fuckers, denizen is Hephaestus. There's also a stock exchange, which our friend David may or may not make a killing.
RP sample: you can check out all my dave'in in the test drive meme here. Highlights include Dave convincing Theta Sigma that he's the Master, Max Fischer and Dave arguing the comparative importance of clubs vs. preventing doomsday, Dave striking up an ill-advised flirtation with Sn0wman, and Dave and Daverex talking about how awesome they are.
